Definitions of Kuldevi, Kuldevta, Gotra and Samaj

The Kuldevi or Kuldevata is the guardian of the clan,so generation by generation people worship the deity of their clan. A Hindu family faiths a kuldevi as their Mother,so when a  child takes birth,parents get the child to the temple of their Kuldevi or Kuldvata for "Jaat-Jadoola" (a ritual of first hair cutting at the kuldevi temple) and gain blessing of deity.

 कुलदेवी (Kuldevi) -              देवी के जिस रूप को परम्परा से कुलदेवी या कुलमाता के रूप में सामाजिक मान्यता है तथा जिसके धाम पर जात-जड़ूले आदि मांगलिक कार्य सम्पन्न किये जाते है, उसे ही यहाँ कुलदेवी कहा गया है। श्रीजीणमाता, श्रीदधिमथी श्रीसंचायमाता आदि देवियाँ कुलदेवी के रूप में पूजित है। (Goddess of the clan whose social recognition is as a deity or matriarch. People pave religious traditional rituals as "Manglik Jaat-Jadula" etc. at the abode of Kuldevi. Sri Jeen mata, Sri Dadhimati mata etc.are venerable as the deity Kuldevi)

कुलदेवता (Kuldevta)  -            कुछ देवताओं को परम्परागत रूप से कुलदेवता माना जाता है। उनके धाम पर जात-जड़ूले आदि मांगलिक कार्य किये जाते हैं। श्रीबालाजी, श्रीश्यामजी आदि कुलदेवता कहलाते हैं। इनकी मान्यता गोत्रानुसार नहीं होती। मान्यता के मूल में व्यक्ति की श्रद्धा ही होती है।
(Kuladevta traditionally considered the god of clan. "Jaat-Jadula" etc. are auspicious functions paved at Kuldevta's abode. Sri Balaji, Sri Shyamji etc. are called Kuladevta. Their recognition is not according to castes. At the core of recognition is individual reverence.)

 गोत्र (Gotra/Tribe) -                     कुल-परम्परा को गोत्र कहते हैं। यहां गोत्र का तात्पर्य है - सामाजिक गोत्र। ये प्रत्येक समाज में भिन्न-भिन्न इन्हें खांप, गोत, अंवटक, शासन, उपगोत्र  आदि भी कहा जाता है। विशेष अपवाद को छोड़ कर प्राय: सामाजिक गोत्र  के आधार पर ही कुलदेवियों का निर्धारण होता है। यह ऋषिगोत्र से भिन्न है  तथा व्यक्ति स्थान आदि के नाम पर होता है। इसका प्राचीन साहित्य तथा लोकव्यवहार में प्रचलन है। जिस समाज के साहित्य में जो संज्ञा इस सामाजिकगोत्र के लिए प्रचलित है उसी का प्रयोग यहाँ किया गया है।
(Clan-tradition is called the Gotra. It implies here - social caste. In every society it is called as different types like "Khaanp"," Got","Avantak", "Shaashan", "Upgotra" etc.. It is often based on social caste to determines Deities of clans aside special exceptions. It is different from "Rishigotra" and based on the name of the person or the place. It is practiced in ancient literature and Society)

समाज (Community/Samaj) -       यहाँ समाज का अर्थ है- एक ही परम्परा के गोत्रों का समूह।   जैसे ' दाधीचसमाज'  'माहेश्वरीसमाज' आदि। इन समाजों की सामाजिक संस्थाओं का इसी आधार पर गठन होता है।
(society here means - a group of tribes of the same tradition. Such as' Dadhich Community  'Maheshwari Community" etc.. These societies are formed on the basis of social institutions.)
